Junior golf

Members may have seen the newspaper articles, earlier this week, reporting the launch of Scottish Golf Limited (formed from the amalgamation of the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association) and in which EKGC was mentioned in connection with Junior golf. Marc Warren subsequently “tweeted” support for the work which has been done at the Club with the Junior section and Al Renny has taken the opportunity to write to the editors of those newspapers which carried the article - as per the text below. The note has also been sent to EK News and Bunkered Magazine.

Dear Sir,

I am delighted that Marc Warren, Scotland’s leading golfer in the World Rankings, has acknowledged East Kilbride Golf Club’s current positive attitude to promoting Junior golf and has pledged his willingness to lend further support in our efforts to expand this essential component of a thriving Club.

It was very disappointing to learn that Marc and some of his contemporaries felt less than welcome as Juniors at our Club. It is little comfort to realise that this reflected an attitude towards Juniors which prevailed throughout many Golf Clubs at that time.

However, golf and most importantly, East Kilbride Golf Club has changed considerably since those days.

At East Kilbride Golf Club, Junior Membership is open to 8-17 year olds, with relatively modest fixed subscription rates designed to promote participation in golf. Juniors can then progress to Youth Membership, with discounted subscriptions applicable until 30 years of age.

The Club actively participates in Clubgolf. Over the past eleven years we have run summer and winter coaching programmes supervised, initially, by our previous Club Professional Paul McKay and now by his successor Graeme Bell. At this point in time, we have our healthiest Junior section since the 1970s – and we have room for more, particularly girls.

Through our support of Junior Golf we hope to continue to introduce youngsters of all abilities to the sport in a friendly, welcoming environment.

And you never know - the next Marc Warren may already be in our midst.

Alastair Renny

Captain

East Kilbride Golf Club
