Junior golf

Members may have seen the newspaper articles, earlier this week, reporting the launch of Scottish Golf Limited (formed from the amalgamation of the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association) and in which EKGC was mentioned in connection with Junior golf. Marc Warren subsequently “tweeted” support for the work which has been done at the Club with the Junior section and Al Renny has taken the opportunity to write to the editors of those newspapers which carried the article - as per the text below. The note has also been sent to EK News and Bunkered Magazine.

Dear Sir,

I am delighted that Marc Warren, Scotland’s leading golfer in the World Rankings, has acknowledged East Kilbride Golf Club’s current positive attitude to promoting Junior golf and has pledged his willingness to lend further support in our efforts to expand this essential component of a thriving Club.

It was very disappointing to learn that Marc and some of his contemporaries felt less than welcome as Juniors at our Club. It is little comfort to realise that this reflected an attitude towards Juniors which prevailed throughout many Golf Clubs at that time.

However, golf and most importantly, East Kilbride Golf Club has changed considerably since those days.

At East Kilbride Golf Club, Junior Membership is open to 8-17 year olds, with relatively modest fixed subscription rates designed to promote participation in golf. Juniors can then progress to Youth Membership, with discounted subscriptions applicable until 30 years of age.

The Club actively participates in Clubgolf. Over the past eleven years we have run summer and winter coaching programmes supervised, initially, by our previous Club Professional Paul McKay and now by his successor Graeme Bell. At this point in time, we have our healthiest Junior section since the 1970s – and we have room for more, particularly girls.

Through our support of Junior Golf we hope to continue to introduce youngsters of all abilities to the sport in a friendly, welcoming environment.

And you never know - the next Marc Warren may already be in our midst.

Alastair Renny

Captain

East Kilbride Golf Club

Christmas Buffet Theme Nights

It's only September, but the time has come for Members to make their bookings for the Christmas Buffet Theme Nights, which include dancing to the very popular DAYBREAK.

Like last year, there will be two events - the first on Saturday 12 December 2015 and the second a week later on Saturday 19 December 2015.

The ticket price is £30 and members can book places at the bar, by paying a £10 deposit per ticket. In order to assess the requirement for table sizes for Members and their guests, who wish to sit together, it is important that one Member acts as the lead Member for his/her group, when it comes to booking and making payments.  In the past, we have had double bookings when, say, a couple books and pays, whilst, at the same time, they have been included in a group booking.  Please help us to avoid this situation.

A copy of Au-Gratin's excellent buffet menu is attached.

The quality of the food and entertainment makes these events excellent value for money compared with other offerings at the time of year.  Such was the demand for tickets last year that some people were disappointed, when the maximum number of places available was reached.  Therefore, please book, in the manner described above, as soon as possible, to ensure that you don't miss out.

Lanarkshire Golf Association - A hat trick for East Kilbride GC

As reported elsewhere, John Woodhouse recorded a superb victory over Ed Wood in the final of the LGA Matchplay event to secure a hat trick of wins for East Kilbride Golf Club in this year’s LGA competitions.

John’s victory came after Kenny Gallacher secured the Strokeplay event and Cameron Boomer won the Youth trophy.  Congratulations to all three.

Friday 31 July 2015

Lanarkshire Golf Association - Match Play Championship - Final

When our own John Woodhouse met Ed Wood (Crow Wood GC) in the Final of the LGA Match Play Championship on 16 July 2015, bad light caused the match to come to a premature end at the 21st hole.  The match has now been arranged for Thursday 6 August – tee-off at 17.30hrs..  A good turnout of supporters would be appreciated.

Friday 17 July 2015

Lanarkshire Golf Association - Match Play Championship - Final

Bad light eventually stopped play in the final of the Match Play Championship last night, after 21 holes.

John Woodhouse "started like a train" and was 5 under par after 10 holes and 3 up.  Ed Wood turned things around, winning 3 holes in a row to square the match by the 15th.  Both players had chances thereafter.  At the 3rd extra hole, John had a 10 foot putt to win, but it wasn't to be and both players agreed that the light had become too bad to continue. They will return in August to do it all again - date to be confirmed.

Thursday 16 July 2015

Lanarkshire Golf Association Match Play Championship Update

There were mixed fortunes again for EKGC players in last night's semi-final matches:

Cameron Boomer lost to Ed Wood by 4&3.

However, in the other semi-final, John Woodhouse beat Danny Keeney 1 up. In an exciting finish, Danny holed his chip at the 18th for a birdie 4 which would have extended the match, but young John showed nerves of steel to hole his putt from 12 feet to halve the hole and win the match.

The final is played tonight with a 18.19hrs tee-off.  All supporters are welcome as John takes on Ed Wood.

Wednesday 15 July 2015

Lanarkshire Golf Association - Matchplay Championship

In last night’s Quarter Finals, there were mixed results for the EKGC qualifiers:

Kenny Gallacher lost to Danny Keeney (Hamilton GC) 2&1

John Woodhouse beat Luke Scott (Bellshill GC) 2&1

Cameron Boomer beat Jack McMorris at the 19th

Ross Hinshelwood lost to Ed Wood (Crow Wood GC) 5&4

Tonight’s semi-final draw sees John Woodhouse take on Danny Keeney, with Cameron Boomer facing Ed Wood.

The ties will tee off from 17.45  Supporters will be welcome.

Tuesday 14 July 2015

Congratulations to our own Kenny Gallacher who successfully defended last year’s victory, recording rounds of 69, 72 for 141 aggregate and going on to win a play-off at the 5th extra hole against Ed Wood (Crow Wood GC) who had also shot rounds of 69, 72.
